I know it is not likely anybody can change their minds. They basically have to come to the conclusion themselves that they have been conned, but I think you can short circuit them a bit. The issue is, and it has just grown worse for them, I know from watching Fox, they must often hold two totally contradicting ideas in their head at the same time. Now, this is not unusual, we are contradictory creatures, but some of the ones they have to hang onto really are whoppers. You can't get them to directly admit to this and even if you do manage to walk them through it, their preference is to go back to a place where they can insulate themselves from whatever you made them consider.
Also, I don't think you can do it on the internet, because it provides an easy escape hatch for them. They just stop responding to you. If you can have a face to face, actually get them into an open discussion, then you can get their wheels turning a bit.
I've tried it. On the internet, my failure rate is huge. In person, I've actually had chats where Trump supporters think about what I am saying and I think it does hit them. Of course, they can go home, turn on FOX for a couple hours, or even more insane right-wing media, and whatever they did briefly consider, well, it is scrubbed right out of their mind.
I do like when a Trump supporter does figure out that he has been conning them because wow, do they get pissed off at Donny and generally all their fellow Trump supporters. I mean, they have more reason to be angry at Trump than we do because they fell for it so, I don't blame them.
Cult members when they do get free of the cult thinking, often feel very empty inside because they have lost this thing that had been so much a part of them. I imagine it is very hard and probably takes a while to get past.
I do think we should try to assist them and have empathy for them. If Marc ever does come around, it will probably be painful for him so, we should try to give him a soft landing.
