In the school I went to in Japan we were offered judo or soccer, and I found soccer both tedious and stressful, and it seemed to involve inordinate amounts of running around, so judo it was! Then, moving to the US, it was something familiar to a stranger in a strange land, and there was a terrific instructor my father knew from Korea who had set up shop in Santa Monica and I just kind of kept it up. Then I started running around adventuring with one of the instructors at that dojo, an American—third-ranked karate champion, who came out of a pretty extreme school in Detroit, who introduced me to a different side of things, which then ended up leading me to even different aspects. Then I needed to get in shape in a hurry once, and I got recommended to a genuinely great instructor named Roy Elghyanan, and I'm due for a three month brush up with him to get in shape after this long stressful sedentary period I've been in. It really is a great, super-efficient way to get in shape, though sort of painful at first.
