Some people say that modernism in music can be calculated by the ways in which it adds dissonance to the musical lexicon, and by this standard the new Republican party is very modern indeed, cognitively speaking. They can 'back the blue,' but still advocate ramming American flags down cops' throats, be 'the party of law and order' and still slavishly follow a serial felon, be the party of 'family values,' and 'Moms for Liberty,' and get into the weirdest, kinkiest stuff this side of the Marquis de Sade. Schoenberg would applaud the dissonance.
