I think it's always been a race for the GOP, and I think their leaders know it. Either:
1. They accomplish a successful authoritarian coup and are able to maintain power for a time with sheer force, or;
2. The delusional and demented Tea Party/Freedom Caucus/MAGA types break the GOP into little bitsy pieces that will take a generation to reassemble.
I think that's why they see their fight as so existential. It's now or never for them. They made a Frankenstein mob and now they can't control it.
