And I actually understand that.  Same as how the far right would be against almost any olive branches.  But that's exactly what's needed.  I was in college in the late 80s and early 90s.  I probably leaned just slightly left, but was far more center than most of my peers.  To a few of that, that made me practically a right-winger, and I wasn't even a Republican.  Occasionally, in some rhetorical argument, I'd get on their wrong side, and I can tell you that (at least then) the left was FAR more aggressive and insulting in their tone.  Several people I even called friends would occasionally get EXACTLY as insulting as you often hear Trump sounding.  And I mean that . . . exactly.  This would even happen if I happened to take a Devil's Advocate position or was just trying to explore the logic the other side might bring to to a position - not actually arguing FOR that position.  It was off-putting to say the least.  At that time, the far-outnumbered right wingers were still in awe of William Buckley, Jr. and tended to argue without yielding much but almost always with respect.  Somewhere along the line, and in particular with Trump, that really changed.  But it didn't change in a vacuum.

And this gets a bit into the weeds, but I might argue that seemingly minor things like the sheer speed of change of certain prior cultural norms (think bathrooms, etc.) has been somewhat understandably provocative to many.  So the left might want to think about pace of reforms it might like to see.  Societies with much longer histories (China, India) seem to get this concept a little better.  I might extend that analogy to Obama and Hillary Clinton pushing to overturn practically the whole Middle East in a single 2-3 year period.  That was phenomenally stupid and actually made MY life fundamentally less safe.  One of several places where I strongly disagree with a college acquaintance, Samantha Power.
