Thanks, Peter,
The juxtaposition of George Floyd's death and the covid-19 pandemic allowed for the first time thousands of unemployed--some looking for something to do, no doubt--to join in protests against the racial disparity the existence of which Floyd's death spewed across the world.
Moments, nay hours to reflect in boardrooms, political offices, across breakfast tables, and on basketball floors, departures from ordinary times the earthquake of the pandemic had spawned, temporally joined the protests with the variety of reactions and contributions, Andrew Sullivan wonders about.
There is only one race: The Human Race. CRT argues against the many races whites have invented, and the racism that's followed from slave ships until today. Floyd/pandemic hastened an ongoing crawl towards a resolution.
The anti liberalism adaptations CRT advocates have taken, such as smothering free speech on college campuses reflects liberalism's traditional debate weapons against AK47 fire-breathing white nationalists and their ilk who come more to disrupt than to reach an agreement. Exceptions of peace bearing articulate people have been unfortunately drowned out by CRT narrow-sightedness.
As I see it Sullivan's worry about the wobbliness of traditional liberalism would be better served were Sullivan to join in the CRT campaign, along with others of his strength of voice, grasp the gift the pandemic offers us, shake systemic racism until it lies lifeless on the floor of the planet, then witness liberalism's promise to fair and equal treatment to all under all circumstances.
My somewhat hurried reaction to Sullivan's thoughtful concerns, assuming I've read him correctly.
I
