I think Putin's goal would have been less to control some specific outcome in the US (very difficult) than was to sow enough chaos so as to diminish the US as a global power. In that sense, his plan has worked perfectly. That was probably going to happen anyway as China continued to grow, but the acceleration of that process has to make him happy.
