Interesting article on the wire services today basically said that the IMF put forth that fuel subsidies were among the most damaging aspects preventing a cleaner and more sustainable energy plan. The USA was named as being a problem with lots of indirect subsidies. Venezuela is too with 5cents/gallon fuel that costs around $16 billion a year to the state-owned PdVSA.

It's a whole new thread, but it is an interesting subject.
