Icon Re: Chavez and oil...

Somewhere between Ayn Rand and Jesus Christ the bubble in the level of Individualism/Community moves between selfishness and altruism. Chavez excused his move from altruism to greed by his successful efforts to improve the lot of the poor, which he did in some measure before selfishness (greed) stepped in and interfered with his dream, just as it has in all attempts at communism. Profits from the tools of production placed in the hands of a government headed by monarchy ultimately feed the coffers of the monarch.

Selfishness is based on fear, as is an individualism that refuses to admit to any loyalty other than to one's immediate community. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Shawn Hannity, and the others you mentioned, preach fear to individualists, such as Marc, who quake at the mention of arms control, taxation, immigration, and any government sponsored program designed to relieve some of the pain felt by the disadvantaged.

The bubble strikes a balance in men such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Ted Turner, and yes, Sean Penn, and others, celebrities in their own right, who never lose sight of the bigger community, even the world, they are, like Socrates, citizens of.

Of course they use their celebrityhood with which to espouse and display and put into action their values.

In this context, they are fearless individuals, spitting on the grave of Ayn Rand and living in the shadow of the man who forgave the thief.
