Wait a minute...you're telling me that Stew recently broke something, that hadn't been originally broken (at least once) by his brothers or Stang and Summers just in time for another tour?

Perhaps one of his brothers taught him that in Alanon where he must've been born; instead of Egypt as widely reported.

What are the first songs/bands (the Muppet's Animal springs to my personal recollection) that made you want to aggressively, percussively, keep time to begin with....please unleash the StarkravingBAD favorites for my edification.

Many thanks in advance,

Lee

yeah, Stew mixed it up a bit back in the day, eh?!

as for what got the drum bug biting so hard...shit, i don't know. grew up on Moonie & Bonzo, of course, then got into new wave and punk @ '81.

i saw a guy named Eric Atkinson playing drums my soph year in '82 at Marin Academy (before i got kicked out, anyway) and thought it looked...well, cool as shit (whatever that means)...so i started bringing the noise, much to the dismay of dear old ma and the neighbors... and became very influenced by:

* Stew (unheard-of freshness. seeing him rip the Oakland Coliseum on September 10, 1983 at the top of his huge game was like seeing God. i shit you not.)

* Joe Jackson's original drummer Dave Houghton (rockin)

* Simple Minds' Mel Gaynor (power)

* Adam & the Ants' original (Dirk Wears White Sox) drummer Dave Barbarossa (tasty)

* Fishbone's fish (skankalicious)

* Simon Phillips, when he was working with Pete. they did a video from the Deep End show in the UK in '85, and he is just...Simon Phillips. nice guy, too.

* i also really love Manu Katche (PG), Yuval Gaby (Soul Coughing) and Prairie Prince (Tubes). and a million more...

for many of the early years i heard people tell me i sounded like Stew and i used to be all, cool...then i realized: not so cool. took a while to develop my own style (read: rip off enough people and percolate it all in your internal rhythm blender...), but apparently somewhere along the way it happened. wanna buy my album? :)
