Icon MP3 vs CD sound quality

I am not a downloader of music. I like the feel of a CD cover in my hand. I can explore the artwork and liner notes. In the past week, I have had cause to wonder about the sound quality of the two alternatives. Our local Kmart is downsizing its CD/DVD section - I was chasing the latest triple J hottest 100 DVD and was told they were going out of the hard products assuming that consumers are turning to dowmloads. This was borne out while listening to a triple j interview with Josh Pyke. He formed a group called Basement Birds with Kevin Mitchell (Bob Evans/Jebediah), Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe) and another guy named Steve. They played a song which I really liked and then announced that they were releasing the album in digital bundles. On the opposing side, another independent singer-songwriter that I like (Paul Greene) said in his newsletter this week that after hearing MP3 versions of his music, he has decided that a CD release is the way to go.

Was wondering what people here thought.
