I think a big chunk of this defeat lies with the re-ascendancy of the DLC after Obama's win. Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff and the whole Republican-Lite crowd back in power through the whole party structure. Dean emphasized a whole country/50 state campaign strategy through his tenure, as opposed to the Rham/DLC selective push for winnable seats while not putting resources behind those seats they considered "safe". The party TOTALLY ignored this race until it was lost, then they threw panic at it - a wiener formula.
