My 15 year old daughter Alyssa has been set an English assignment to "choose a song that you believe makes a strong social comment and present an oral analysis of your song". The suggested songs included "Strange Fruit" (Billie Holiday), "Clampdown" (The Clash), "The Dead Heart" (Midnight Oil), "Luka" (Suzanne Vega), "Eve of destruction" (Barry McGuire), "What's going on?" (Marvin Gaye), "Dear God" (XTC), "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" (Eric Bogle), "The Message" (Grandmaster Flash), "Treaty" (Yothu Yindi), "Born in the USA (Springsteen) and a few more.We decided that DB tends to write lyrics that make a strong social comment, so just before dinner last night, the 4 of us watched Triage again (a somewhat unusual family activity...). After viewing the images associated with the lyrics, we decided that whilst it was undoubtedly strong in social comment, it was probably a little disturbing for the unsuspecting and perhaps we might use "The Stranger" instead.Any suggestions as to appropriate songs and their meanings would be welcomed.
