Laptops have been out selling desktops overall far the last couple years, which is a big factor in the price reductions.
Most campuses are pretty much totally wi-fi covered, so you can work on your papers, etc. anywhere on campus. Smartphones are limited in processing capacity, and the software that ties them to Office Apps has reduced features - so if you want to work on anything other than Text, like inserting charts or photos, your pretty much screwed - When it comes to power points, they will only handle static pages, no transitions, no animations. I tried using my Centro as a Note Taker w/ a Bluetooth Keyboard, but it sucked the battery dry in about 3 hours of use.
