I know techies that like their toshibas partly because of their hale hardiness. As far as software goes, there are alot of of word, etc shareware programs that are decent, compatible and don't hit the pocketbook so hard. And personally I feel that the MS Office suite is way over the top unless you really do want to be a publisher.
