LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Despite calls to restrain shock jock Howard Stern, Infinity Broadcasting will stand behind Stern as well as its other radio stars, a top Infinity executive said on Friday.
|
"We're going to support Howard (Stern) and all of our on-air talent 110 percent," Joel Hollander, chief operating officer of Infinity, a unit of Viacom Inc., said during a panel discussion on the state of the industry at the Radio & Records convention here.
In the wake of Janet Jackson (news)'s breast-baring incident at halftime of the Super Bowl and continued controversy over the nature and content of Stern's show, radio and television stations have rushed to equip themselves to delay their broadcasts and allow time to censor out any offensive expressions or behaviors.
Stern, whose ratings have been on the rise of late, is one of the biggest stars in radio and key employee for Viacom. When his long-time benefactor and supporter, Mel Karmazin, quit as Viacom's No. 2 executive earlier this month, Stern said his own days with the company were likely numbered.
In turn, Viacom executives have identified strengthening their relationship with Stern as a top priority.
The panelists, representing some of the largest U.S. radio chains, derided what they said were overly broad standards on indecency and a climate where broadcasters have to tiptoe to avoid thousands of dollars in fines.
"You're guilty without any proof necessary," said Clarke Brown, president of the radio division of Jefferson-Pilot Communications, a unit of Jefferson-Pilot Corp. .
