Change!
So, George W. Bush was less than 30 miles away from me yesterday...as was Sen. Kerry for the commemoration of the Brown v. Board of Education Celebration yesterday. And "Our President" brought up this whole Constitutional Amendment for Sanctity of Marriage thing. One of my co workers was there and described the looks on folks faces as if they'd been slapped in the face. How someone could celebrate a victory for equality and simultaneosly suggest a blow against it was an insult. But what the hell...it's Kansas, right? We're the ones who have allowed an almost entirely right wing zealot School Board to run the school system into the ground. Might as well wipe his butt on the Civil Rights Movement while he's here. Even the conservatives were sickened.
Eschewing reality television for Educational Programming, my wife and I took shelter on the sofa and watched a program on similar legislation from Hoxie, Arkansas during the 50's regarding segregated schools. The same arguments to keep African American students out of white schools were the same rationale as have been made to keep Homosexual couples from marrying.
Me, I gain nothing from this...I'm white, straight, already married...I've got insurance...so I don't see the big problem with it. But the bigotry of the past sure sounds like bigotry of the present.
So, Paul's take on it...If your marriage is threatened because it is recognized to be as good as newlyweds Robert and Dave...then you need a better marriage. Love is strengthened by adversity...and anyone who gets married in this shit storm can do nothing but grow. So, to all the Robert and Daves and Sonjas and Ginas out there...congratulations! May the road rise to meet you!
