Unfortunately, money, power, & fame/immortality are temptations that very few people can resist for too long. Many of our leaders may have started out with the people's business in mind, but like Smeagol and the ring (pardon the LOTR reference) they've been twisted and corrupted by the influence of those who place their own monetary gain and personal ambition over the good of their fellow humans . . .
