Yeah, I agree, try it by ear, is best.  Did you figure out the tuning to Bitter Tree yet?  Check my earlier post in the archives.  I kinda got the jest of it, watching David tune at the Baltimore show, and then I cheated a little by looking up a list of favorite altered tunings and it was in there.
