I have not really been picking up much new stuff in the rock 'n' roll area but here's a couple that I think are worth getting:
"1972" by Josh Rouse- 1972 was the year Mr. Rouse was born and this is sort of a concept record based around that year. So the music and lyrics reference those times. In the very first song he mentions Carol King and the music has nods to Al Green and Marvin Gaye throughout. I think it's a pretty fine record...mellow sure...but it's a good listen and I think he got a great overall sound. A long time ago I had posted about the two guys named Josh (Rouse & Ritter) I had been listening to...I know Kevin in Arizona is a big fan of Mr. Ritter and I have his new one as well but I'm enjoying "1972" more at the moment. If you like "1972" I also recommend "Under Cold Blue Stars" the previous release from Mr. Rouse. Good stuff.
"About Time" by Steve Winwood- Ok, I should start by saying I always thought Mr. Winwood's solo output was...well...hideous. All that 80's crap he did was aweful so I've been ignoring this guy for a good couple decades. It was made all the more disturbing to me because I liked Traffic, Blind Faith, and the Spencer Davis Group. So, whenever I heard stuff by the solo Mr. Winwood I always cringed and went..."Good god, how did this guy end up making this crap."...so pretty much a friend had to lock me in a room and force me to listen to this record...he said I'd love it...said it was like Traffic...to which I responded "Bullshit!" and began thinking of ways to break down the door or escape through a window. Well, turns out he was correct...I did love it and it did remind me of Traffic. I'll tell you what I thought when I heard it...I thought it was some recording left over from the 70's that had just been released. No, it's new stuff and Mr. Winwood never crawls out from behind his glorious sounding B-3 throughout the record. I mean, this is truly awesome and honestly "classic rock" if I've ever heard such a thing. They just don't make records like this anymore. I certainly never figured Winwood would make a great record again but here it is. No, 80's sheen...no synths...all 70's classic rock power and funk. Trust me you gotta hear this one.
