My wife and I visit Maine several times each year, usually to visit our favorite beach.Today we did that, and then we extended our drive just a bit north to the small city of Biddeford. It was there that this past Monday a 25-year old man, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a Colombian with a social security number and the legal right to work here, was driving to work when ICE agents stormed his car, and ultimately shot and killed him. I walked all over the scene, impressed by the abundance of flowers, chalk messages on the sidewalk, letters of support, and the silent, respectful gathering of people who were paying their respect, and bearing witness to this senseless death. I guess I was trying to imagine what Mr. Guerrero was thinking and seeing that day. Probably just another week of endless driving from restaurants and deliveries to customers, one predictable blur of work to support his wife and child. I tried to imagine the instantaneous jolt of panic, confusion, and terror that hit him out of the blue. How could anyone in such a position be expected to react in a cool, rational manner when your survival instincts kick in. His death could have been any death, if you fit the dark complexion profile. There have been so many despicable, truly anti-American, anti-human assaults by this administration, with many more to follow. I have no answers, but I do know that the callous racists in the White House who engineered this assault in order to maximize human suffering will one day be out of power. I am confident that America will not forget their names, their faces, and their cruelty.
