In many ways there is a logic to that. If someone did make an attempt, it would be one of his own (and was the last time), from the inside. His followers will be the ones he most enrages as he betrays them. They will form a line of patsies that stretch from sea to shining sea. Plus, yes, by getting elected again he has now served out his purpose and now would likely be most useful as a martyr.
