Icon Some observations....

After reading some of the postings here about muscians and reading how some think this
person or that person is over or underrated started me thinking about the reasons some
muscians and their music are so meaningful to certain individuals.

I've realized that often times the attraction is similar to that of the friendship with a
someone over a long journey.  I've noticed that the work we follow of a particular artist is
like a companion to us and forms a bond at particular junctures in our lives.  And often
times we want a particular bond to reemerge, but in our insatiable appetite we never get
that same thrill that once occurred.   Sometimes this disappoints us too.

For example, when DB's WTTB came out in 1986 it fit right along with my feelings at that
particular time.  Promise with despair, meeting new people while dealing with flawed
ones, and so on.  I had just moved to a new city to go to school and knew hardly
anyone.  Friends were an hour and a half away, but not really close.  My point is, if he put
this same material out today it would not carry as much weight to ME as it did back then.
Hell, even dispair is better to feel than nothing at all.  The wonderful thing about following
a muscician for so long is that both the listener and the artist grow and you get to feel that.
The bad thing is that every now and then an artist will become a white hot phenomenon
where the general masses latch on to a particular time and place without appreciating the
artist's entire work, then all future work will be held to almost certain unattainable
standards.

Which takes me back to Bruce Springsteen.  I wish everyone will find an artist to follow
and is able to follow that artist's work over the period of years that I have followed
Springsteen.  It's hard to explain, but being in my very early 20's and discovering his music
and following it in a way that parallels my own life is what makes the work of any musician
so enjoyable.

Springsteen put it best the other night when being interviewed by Ted Koppel.  He
pointed out that his shows are not that he and the band just stand there and sing, but it is a
concert, where the performance is a concert between he and the crowd.  It is done
together with both bringing something to the show.  To me, that is how it can be between
fans and muscians over a long time.

That is why I never disparage anyone for liking muscians I don't. For in that particular
musician that person's answers may be found, even though some of us just don't
understand.

Thoughts anyone?
