I think that our popular media allows for a disastrous thing to happen to musician's and this is that often times we think all of a musician's output is the same as a musician's most popular work. In Springsteen's work, look at how many people think his work is all throaty yelling because of "Born in the USA."
But you can do this with almost any artist and see how his or her craft is severely hampered by the sudden interest of the American fad driven mind and how it prevents most from really appreciating the long careers of those we admire.
My suggestion to anyone is to pull one of his first cd's, listen to it and then listen to "The Ghost of Tom Joad" or even his newest one and one will see the wide range of his skills and his art.
I have seen Springsteen both acoustically and with the E Street Band and both were remarkable for their particular styles.
