I backed into Adrian Belew by way of Laurie Anderson. He performed on her live stage show/movie/album of "Home of the Brave". His inventive playing style melds extremely well with left-of-center artists like Anderson. His work on Nine Inch Nail's "The Fragile" was inspired. His unique abilities to emit strange noises from a guitar are a natural fit with the (wonderful) noise that freak Reznor makes. I whole-heartedly second the recommendation to check out Belew...
