I noticed the message about some books being questioned or even banned in schools. Well, as an educator of fifth grade students, I wanted to get in my 2 cents.
First of all, Harry Potter books are sparking an interest in reading that I have not seen in my 10 years of teaching. Students who normally would not pick up a book are now begging their parents to buy them the next edition. To me, this is a wonderful event! To many, it is the mark of the devil taking over our country.
There is a local school who is facing the decision of banning the Harry Potter books form their schools. Now, I have no problem if an individual does not want their child to read certain material, but I do have a problem with certain people making a decision for the rest of the children.
There is another wonderful book that is under much criticism. The book is called, "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. This book is about a society in the future that has no pain, no decisions, no crime, no hunger, etc. It sound great right? Well, you will need to read the book to find out the horror of this community. I give and recommend this book to everyone. It is not just a children's book.
I suggest that everyone on this board check out the following books that are being banned all over the country :
