In actual fact the current government is (mean't to be) socialist. We're ruled by the Labour party at the moment, who were traditionlly a left wing party.
However, this stance didn't seem to be winning them much of the vote, and so Tony Blair came in to turn things around and create 'New Labour'(TM) which arguablly has more in common with Margeret Thatcher's government of the 80's than Labour's traditionally left wing views.
