I have thought seriously about what I have done. The first time I listed a copy - I think it was back in the spring - David came on and said ~ I could do what I wanted, but would actually be better off waiting for the demand to increase. There was nothing in that exchange that gave me the impression that he was steamed.
What would I think if he had auctioned the copies off? I'd say he picked a creative distribution method. What's more, I still would have been one of the first to get a copy. What if he held an auction and the bidding never hit $20? Should the buyer then feel guilty and send in more money?
I think it's great that so many people are showing so much passion on this topic, but wake the hell up. When a CD gets resold, the artist doesn't get more royalties. Should we all look through our collection and for every out of print article we have acquired send a voluntary donation somewhere?
I just paid over $30 for a copy of the video "Dance". Just got tired of waiting for someone to give it to me for free since that is obviously the only rightous thing one could do with a promo tape they themselves got for nothing. Ya right! I am damn glad that person was considerate enough to put it back into circulation, and after I get done watching it about fifty times I may just do the same thing.
