You're not the first one to see a resemblance between Boomtown and Less Than Zero. It's purely coincidental, though I actually confess to having enjoyed the book. I generally do like to have a "book of the record", to kind of keep the threads together and remind me of an overall mood.
In Boomtown's case, it was Nathaniel West's novellas Day of The Locust and Miss Lonelyhearts, with a smattering of 30's
pulp writing, seasoned lightly with Lou Reed's Berlin.
As an aside, however, the touring keyboardist with David and David was Jeff Martin, a very gifted musician and the leader of the group Idaho, and also the inspiration for one of the characters in Less Than Zero.
Re Bruce Springsteen, of course I'm flattered and gratified that he's enjoyed my writing... Though I dont find myself drawn very often to his records, I dont doubt for a second his commitment to his job, and there've been times when his music has given me a very real charge. I spoke to him briefly backstage both here in LA and in San Francisco on this last tour, gave him a copy of A Fine Mess, and havent heard from him since. I hope that doesnt mean that I've lost his favor.
As yet another aside, Dave Ricketts and Pam Springsteen (sister) were married for several years, and remain good friends.
