I think it's funny that you mentioned throwing Christians to the lions, because I think it sort of proves my point. Wasn't it P.T. Barnum that said you'd never go broke appealing to the lowest common denominator? Look at history: throwing Christians to lions (thanks for jogging my memory) to burning witches to Limp Bizkit. Looking at it that way, I'd have to say we're actually a lot MORE enlightened when it comes to our entertainment than we've ever been.
Your comment about a return of the '50s made me think of Pat Boone and all his horrible, horrible hit records. If you haven't already done so, I'd encourage you to do some research on him. Another example of 1) how shit floats and 2) a person making lots of money with an inferior copy of someone else's ideas.
