Not really...at least I don't think so. Here is what got me thinking about this. There is a commercial for the VW Cabriolet where 4 young people are driving to a party. What you hear is an acoustic guitar and a lilting voice singing some barely recognizable words. A quick check of the internet turns up a name behind the music - Nick Drake. Now I've heard of Nick Drake mentioned by other people but never took the time to give a listen myself...until now. From what I've heard so far, I think I could like Nick Drake. As I was looking for this information, I waded through many a post from people lamenting the fact that Nick's music is being used to sell cars. It was as if a musician they admired as much for his music as for his obscurity was being made available for public consumption. Now I know that DB is not really that obscure...but I bet that most of the people that call themselves fans don't know too many other people who even know who he is. Myself included. So my question is - what would you as a fan think if you heard a DB tune on a TV commercial. I think I would be pretty excited to hear something like that. But I don't know. I thought Ani Difranco's 32 Flavors being used for an NFL promo was cool, but I don't like Phillips using the Beatles. I guess it depends what DB is selling. Here's a question for David - have you ever been approached to do music for a commercial? Would you do something like that? By the way - the name of that song in the VW ad is Pink Moon.

Now your patrons have all left you in the red. Your low rent friends are dead. This life can be very strange.
