I’m in the middle of Chapter 1 “The Mythical Past” but I thought I’d go ahead and post one thing that jumped out at me, but first things first: my snack for this discussion. I’ve been given a plethora of tomatoes including a bunch of Roma tomatoes so have been trying to make different recipes with them. Last night I made a salsa that I had to let “marinate” overnight so I enjoyed that with some tortilla strips. The salsa was perfect, maybe a little too heavy with jalapeños but not too spicy. Besides learning that Hitler learned from our past, with our Civil War and Jim Crow era, how to develop his ideology I realized something else that just really jumped out at me. Fascists always want to look to the past where things were better and men were in charge and women knew their place as child bearers and keepers of the family but nothing else in society. They look back to a time, like Jim Crow, or like the “Old South” where non-whites “knew their place” in society and it sure wasn’t as equals to white men. At one point, it was pointed out that women being subservient to men was not found in matriarchal societies like those of Judaism or Roma people so they were viewed with disgust and scorn. The huge thing that jumped out at me when I started reading this chapter though was how trump’s campaign and whole plan has always been based on the mythical past. Every time we see a red hat, we see him and his cult followers harken back to their “mythical past” when they express, loudly and proudly, “Make America Great AGAIN.” Hope to get more reading in later today but just wanted to pop in with that observation before I forgot! I prefer the slogan “Looking to the future, not the past” (or something to that effect!)
