In the gossip world, these are the "blind items" this guy nicknamed Enty Lawyer posts on the website. 

He throws them out there for people to figure out who the blind items refer to.  The odd thing is, for a gossip site, at times he is remarkably accurate.

And like you suggested, some of these are amusing and ways for a momentary distraction that has now befallen upon us.
