Andrea, and all you parents out there..

The orbital cellulitis that Kathryn had posted about, usually starts as what appears to be nothing more than conjunctivitis (ie "Pink Eye").   However with certain infections, there is spread beyond the conjunctiva (lining) of the eye, to other peri-ocular structures, and tissues, even including the eye muscles.  When that happens, the eye can swell tremendously, and lose the ability to move normally.   Make no mistake about it...this is a medical EMERGENCY, and treatment must be IMMEDIATE.

If your child develops "Pink Eye", always see a Physician, and if possible an Ophthalmologist, if there is even the slightest hint that this may be something more.  Any swelling or PAIN is very worrisome, and a big "red flag" that the situation is serious.  Usually regular Conjunctivitis is not painful, but the eye will burn or be described as "itchy".   Never leave things to doubt.  See your doctor!

Hope that's helpful.
