https://www.billboard.com/music/rock/garland-jeffreys-new-documentary-film-bruce-springsteen-feature-1235465295/ In 1977, WBCN in Boston broadcast a concert by Garland Jeffreys. I had only known him by his classic song, Wild In The Streets. The performance hooked me and I have been a fan ever since. About 30 years ago, he was off my radar, this was pre-Internet of course so I found his phone number in a NYC phonebook at our public library. It was a Sunday afternoon and I gave him a call. His wife, Claire, answered and said he was asleep but she'd wake him up. I immediately responded NO NO, but she did anyway. The chat was relatively short, I no doubt blathered on about my love of his songs, and my wondering when he'd resurface with music and a performance. He was gracious, and interested, and even wanted me to send him a copy of the Boston show that I had recorded, which I happily did. I had the pleasure of seeing him a few times over the years, even got to introduce my family to him. Always gracious, down to earth! Anyway, a long awaited, 7 years in the making, documentary is out, but sadly, Garland is in the grip of late stage Alzheimers. Still, the music, and his spirit, endure! For the uninitiated, give a listen to the songs below. He often writes of his beloved and native NYC, and his mixed race ancestry, and how he navigated the wider world. Wild In The Streets, 35 Millimeter Dreams, Welcome To The World, New York Skyline, Cool Down Boy, R.O.C.K., Christine, Don't Call Me Buckwheat, Rough and Ready...you get the idea. Peter T.
