In a time when science is under attack, and frankly, it's always been to one degree or another, there's a great spokesman for it who is held in high esteem by the kids and their teachers: Bill Nye. His videos are frequently played in schools around the country. His sunny disposition and ability to teach the joys of science have impressed me for many years. Truth be told, his 30-40 minute shows have also been known to provide teachers with a much needed moment to catch their breath! The Scientific Method is taught in 6th grade in my district. What isn't taught, at least to my knowledge, is that the principles of it can be applied to areas outside of science. Political ideas, historical questions, you name it, can all be evaluated using the Scientific Method. I just don't think teachers and students realize the opportunity. Furthermore, I don't think it's stressed nearly enough that scientific knowledge is held on a provisional basis, as new evidence might come to light to overturn long established knowledge. And that should be celebrated when it does occur as it reflects intellectual honesty and humility. If only we could be celebrated for willingly changing our views when better, more convincing evidence emerges. I'm reminded of that great quote from John Maynard Keynes, Churchill, or whoever, "When the facts change, I change my mind, what do you do, sir?"
