There's a fantastic scene in a film about Howard Hughes, unfortunately I can't remember which one, but in the film Hughes is by this time utterly insane, terrified of germs, holed up in his tower in Las Vegas, drugged and enveloped in Mormon bodyguards. Rita Hayworth visits him and listens to him rave about germs and dirt, at first partially amused and and then entirely aghast. "It's a dirty world, Howard," she says. "It just is."
