Yeah, it's still about the product, but it's easier to take a flyer on a band you've never heard if the CD in question is $10 instead of $18. I think this will give UMG's sales a shot in the arm, and the other labels will be forced to follow suit.
I doubt, however, that sales are ever going to return to pre-Napster levels. A lot of people buy used discs from eBay (if they aren't simply stealing the music)...consumers have a lot more options these days. It's been obvious for a long time that these guys need to change their business model. This could be a step in the right direction.
My favorite part of this story is Doug Morris' quote to the effect of "Now that we're rolling back prices, maybe I can fill a few holes in my collection." Like Doug is hurting for money. Mind if I take that corner office off your hands?
