Lately, our youngest and I have been watching programs and movies together and tonight I talked her into watching Stand By Me from 1986. When the sequence with Buddy Holly's song Everyday came on, for some reason it made me wonder about the lighthearted origins of songs like that back then and if the creative lives and behaviors of artists and creators resembled the bubble gum-like content of songs like Everyday, or if these people led completely different private lives and instead were just chasing hit songs or making popular products to chase the dollar. With how things are today and how much is publicized about the lives of musicians and their behavior it made me wonder if I was naive to think that decades ago people like Buddy Holly and those like him were not as depraved and hedonistic as celebrities of today and if we have always lived in a world where the rot is just under the surface as David Lynch revealed in his film Blue Velvet.
