Icon All In The Family

I have long put All in the Family at the top of my sitcom list. Now, Seinfeld and The Office share that spot, but for different reasons. There's no way that All in the Family could make it today, and that's a shame, because Archie Bunker's bigotry really gives the viewer a window in his narrow, zero-sum game, world. Archie probably saw things as Fred Trump did, as I think they both resided in Queens.

On the National Lampoon magazine front, I've recently purchased copies from their early years (1970-1975). I'm actually shocked at the overt racism, sexism, and homophobia that's freely stated and depicted in the pages. It's been an eye-opener. As a teenager, I probably laughed at some of this stuff. It's also strange reading a magazine with so many cigarette ads. Nat Lamp's target audience was undoubtedly smokers, drinkers, audiophiles, and frustrated white males!
