If one can find it, try a viewing to the very entertaining documentary Very Senior.  I just watched it on Amazon Prime.  It is about a retirement community called Sun City located in Arizona.

It is humorous and touching and not entirely depressing.  I would say more hopeful than a downer.

Amazon also has a documentary called Darwin on again.  It's about a Californian dead-end, sparse town called Darwin.  I've seen it before and will watch it again.  Filled with a lot of oddball, but interesting characters.
