Yep - It all comes down to the inability of the american people to understand the difference between "democratic socialism" and "socialism" as defined by Karl Marx and Engels in "Das Kapital".
Keynes as I'm sure they teach even in US economics classes is the bread and butter of recovery economics i.e. FDR and "democratic socialism" as understood in Europe is pretty much the same.
