Everyone now and then, after far too much immersion in reading, watching, and listening about the world, I am simply left dazed at the complexity of it all. I think of how for most of our species' time here (100, 000 - 250, 000 years), we just searched for our next meal and tried to not be something's next meal. And now, for those of us who frequent Dan's magnificent DBIS corner bar, we binge on a variety of streaming services, we read about most everything under the sun on our devices, live air-conditioned/snuggly heated lives, have wonderful healthcare, and plenty of foods from all over the world. It seems like it happened in the blink of an eye! And I also think of the world's population. In 1800, it was a billion, and now we're headed to 8 billion. What challenges, what opportunities for greatness, or horror. And deep fakes are getting better so how do we have a consensus on what is objective reality? Not that we've had one, I guess.
Here's an accounting of our births and deaths. My students have always been wowed by it, thinking it's a perfect scorecard on who is winning and losing in the game of life.

Spend some time with it. Think about where those births and deaths are happening and what they mean for the future of humanity. Great stuff to share with kids of all ages.
