Icon That's a kind statement, thank you...and a life long lesson tale...

When I was a rookie and full of book smarts education, including all kinds of statistics in my head (like how the leading cause of death among young black males was murder), I once made a comment to a young, juvenile troublemaker that almost started a mini-riot.

Back then there was this large black family that had a handful of males that were creating havoc in this area of town.  It was utterly amazing how this one family was an epicenter for violence and trouble.  At the time, one of these was a juvenile (in policing, the police just hate to deal with juveniles because dealing with adults is easier and less time consuming - juveniles require more procedures, paperwork and additional handling).  See, then, in Illinois, people could be sent to jail when seventeen (now it is 18).  Back then people could also be sent to jail for disorderly conduct, which now it has changed to where permission has to be granted by the county jail.  Juveniles you had to take home, release to a parent or guardian, and could only detain for serious crimes.

So if you had a person you needed out of your hair for at least a few hours, if a disorderly conduct charge would fit, then that would solve the problem for a while.

One day this area was running in full tilt and this juvenile - I'm telling you, he had a mouth on him and was like a wood rasp on the end of fingers - also knew how the rules were.  So he was on the sidewalk yelling at me stuff like, "Motherfucker you can't touch me, I'm a juvie.  So fuck you, fuck you, fuck you"...on and on and on.

Well, with that mind of statistics, I uttered to him how I didn't give a shit "because according to statistics, there is a chance you aren't going to be around too long anyway."  Oh, my, what a learning experience and mistake that was because he then started shouting how I had just threatened to kill him.   Luckily, too much else was going on for this comment to make things worse that day.
