Do you suppose that a related perception existed in Germany during Hitler's rise to power and his subsequent solution to his problems--eradicate the Jews, say--any guilt of which the people, not acknowledging the horror of Hitler's act, were able to deny in the same way you have described Trump's supporters: That is Hitler just being Hitler?
To try to keep it short and simple, no. The primary aspect of that being that I'm not sure how many Germans knew what Hitler's Nazis were actually doing to the Jews and when Germans found out they had a lot of guilt. Now with television and the internet and our 24/7/365 news cycle we find out about everything much faster than they would have in Germany in the 1930s or 1940s. I mean I think if that existed in Germany, the Nazis likely would not have been able to slaughter millions of Jews. However, I also think that all this technology has caused some people to be more removed from what they see on TV or the internet. So, some people just feel nothing for those poor parents and children on our Southern border...they are just dots on the screen to sort of borrow an idea from The Third Man and when one of those dots stops moving or disappears, so what.
I think the technology is great to get us the information quickly but for some it allows them to be removed from the event. So, a big difference between the Germans then and Americans now is that I think a lot of Americans just see this as a show on TV and Trump I think actually sees it that way as well. So, since Trump is the "star" of that show for Trump supporters I think they just feel he is doing what he is doing to make his "reality show" get ratings. That sounds absurd, I know, but Marco Rubio actually said this exact thing yesterday. So, I think in America in 2019 people see Trump as this guy on TV and like anything on TV they feel like it is something they just watch...they don't control it...they are just observers, the audience, for the show. So, it is easy for them to feel no responsibility for it because it is just another show on TV.
Combine this with the idea that they do not trust government at all, do not believe in it at all, and they feel it is hopeless to change anything through government and you just have this perfect recipe for tragedy in this country. I don't think Trump supporters think they have any control over what Trump does nor do I think they feel they have any control over any politician. However, they have this guy Trump that rants and raves about how he does control everything. Sure, it is nonsense but it is likely comforting for a Trump supporter to hear that. I also just think that many Trump supporters have no idea how to fix anything, they think our country is a disaster, and so they just want somebody like Trump to stand up there and tell them he will make it "great again."
Unless, "we're angry with government , period!, any government, even the one we elect", provides an excuse on which they blindly lean.
I would say they lost all hope and belief in government. Trump has done little to help that sort of Trump supporter but he makes a lot of noise and they like that. He speaks like the angry drunk guy at the bar, funny because he does not drink, and that is what they want to hear. They just want to see government destroyed and Trump is doing that so, he is doing what they want.
I think a common aspect with Trump supporters is they have a feeling that they have no control over their lives and they certainly feel they have no control over our government. They produce this sort of never ending wail about how they have been screwed and things have been taken from them. So, for them government is just their enemy, someone else to blame and their fantasy would be to destroy it...and Trump is the destroyer. On this he is coming through in spades.
This is why I think so many of them don't care if Trump is asking Russia, Ukraine, or China to help him destroy our government...as long as it is getting destroyed, they will cheer him on. Anybody that is helping him destroy it is fine with them.
Is that anti-American behavior? Absolutely but look at exactly how Trump appeals to his supporters. First, tell them over and over again what a corrupt shit hole the United States is. Tell them over and over, confirming their beliefs, that everybody in Washington DC is corrupt. Tell them only he is doing something about it. Make up all manner of lies to smear anybody they might not like and repeat them over and over. Then (and really this is the best part) blatantly break the law right out in the open to present the idea that the only way to fight corruption is with corruption which in this twisted logic makes Trump's law breaking and corruption, somehow, more honest to them.
So, they can cheer on Trump's lies, law breaking, and corruption because they think when he does it, it is to destroy what they want destroyed.
So, if these people believe what Trump is saying, everybody is corrupt, then what does it matter if Trump is corrupt, even the most corrupt, as long as he is destroying everything in his path. A Trump supporter would just see that as a win because the most corrupt guy is their guy...so who is better than them.
