I think - for the most part - the goal is to approach the feeling of actually having the musicians right in front of (or behind, above, below) you - removing the added bits the medium itself adds.  No static at all as Steely Dan once said.  Obviously, the nostalgic desire to hear the needle on the record (etc) will keep people buying vinyl and cassettes or wire recorders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90ihiTwJPCc&t=1090s) - or simply listening to music as mp3s on shitty earbuds in the gym.  But the sonic future is realism.  My money's on holograms!  Or do as Peter T does - be front and center of some live music as much as possible.
