Hi folks! My name is Noel. I'm new here. I hope it isn't terrible for me to admit this, but I've
only just recently discovered David, thanks to Madeleine Peyroux's new album. I'm really
excited about what I'm hearing, though — and also have very much enjoyed a couple of
interviews that I've found online.
It's always exciting, for me at least (and I guess for a lot of you), to discover a
songwriter
who's really thoughtful about their craft, and able and willing to talk about it openly, plainly,
and in depth. I mean, as much as I love Bob Dylan, for example, I've rarely if ever read
anything he had to say about songwriting that wasn't itself a kind of "song". And that's
plenty fun, and probably necessary for somebody like that who's swamped with attention
and just has to preserve a big creative space by wallpapering it with misdirection, but
generally speaking most people aren't under that kind of pressure their whole lives. So
then it just becomes a matter of facility and generosity.
So far I get the sense that David has both of those in spades, not only in his creative
work
(obviously), but in his willingness to welcome others into the space where he does that.
So, awesome!
This was just supposed to be a little message to say hi, and to let Dan know that I
made it
through the registration process. I can be wordy, so apologies if that gets your goat.
Last thing: I'd be ever so grateful for any pointers to "the essential" David, whatever
anyone might feel that is, though I plan to at least graze everything I can find. (It would
also be great to find out how to listen, since it seems a lot of stuff is just not on the
streaming services — intentionally?) I won't
mention what I've listened to yet, just to avoid any bias. :-)
Greetings from Berlin,
Noel
