I think when it comes to favored musical performers, many songwriters just don't get the credit they deserve. The other day on my out of doors walk, DB's song In The Wild Wild West played. Though I've heard it many times and have always especially enjoyed the first stanza, while walking at that particular time, I really appreciated the imagery that the first stanza evokes and with relatively so few words. It's like his song Black Mamba Kiss - in the recitation of the words it is almost like you can feel textures, see the imagery and smell the odors. In some ways, I think DB is able to do what the best Southern writers do with their reduced number of words - or as Elmore Leonard said of good writing - leave out the stuff no one wants to read (or in this case, hear).
In The Wild Wild West (Baerwald)There's a dead man
he's lying right outside
his pants crawled up his ass
a detective pokes the body
drinking steady from a flask
I'm glad it's him
that's lying there
it could be me that
took that blast
this is the wild wild west
