Icon Police and politics....

At the most reduced level, the political psyche of police is often based in the perception of strength or weakness on crime.

And typically the belief is that Republicans are tougher on crime than Democrats, so right from the start Republicans have the most visceral of all trump cards dealt right in their hand from the start.

Now, the odd thing is, like I typed earlier, police that lean Republican are so willing to vote against their economic interests all the time and to add to this bizarre choice, since the 1970s, Democrats have been more economically friendly to law enforcement than Republicans. For illustration, in the 1970s Democrats pushed the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration which was instrumental in advancing policing and criminal justice by funding, training, and professionalism. Clinton pushed for more police, while Shrub Bush drastically cut training monies for police and overtime funding. Trump has done the same thing as Bush.

Then throw in the practices of unions and the benefits unions have brought policing. This becomes even more strange when it is pointed out that police in right to work states make less in salaries and benefits than police in non-right to work states.

Now, let's throw in the Supreme Courts' recent ruling on unions and union dues.

With all of these, now we get to throw in Black Lives Matter (let me add his about BLM - to me it is a more complex topic than many officers are willing to admit and therefore refuse to invest enough knowledge into understanding the full scope of BLM). Then there is the internal perception by police that it truly is an "us vs them" atmosphere and the public is against them.

Guns also get factored in - most police believe the Dems and Liberals want to take their guns and cops love guns.

Here is a final example that shows how strong the bond is between Republicans and the police - look back at the most current times of when a Republican has stated in the most critically harshest comments toward law enforcement and walked away from it unencumbered whatsoever - from Bush Sr and his calling ATF agents jackbooted thugs to Trumps more recent comments about the FBI.
