Icon Re-visiting Justified, Deadwood...

The past month I've been re-watching both HBO's Deadwood and FX's Justified and talk about two well-made shows all around.

The dialog in Deadwood does grow stale with how each character seems to talk in the same manner that includes a loopy, reach around dialog that bears constant deciphering of the dialog's meaning. Still, some of the lines are so richly done. And my goodness, when the Al Swearington character is fighting kidney stones and demands a prostitute insert a thumb in the backside to relieve pressure, then after crawling away in pain to elude the digit, then chastises the woman for leaving her thumb inserted by questioning her what did she not understand about him moving away to get away from her thumb as a sign of getting it out of there.

And of course, the set pieces. To imagine all that was created and then torn down and is now being reassembled for another shorter go around.

As for Justified - after reading the books by Elmore Leonard - Raylin Givens as portrayed by Timothy Olyphant could never be replicated by another actor. And the dialog - man, I can imagine Jean Shepherd (writer of In God We Trust, All Other's Pay Cash, i.e., A Christmas Story) narrating how no actor could recite the words of Elmore Leonard such as Olyphant in such a joyous Southern nature.

Sadly, with modern crime shows, the body count in Justified by the Givens character widely exceeds belief. Still, Season Two with Margo Martindale as Mags, a Southern, homicidal, matriarchal crime boss (which she was so rightfully recognized for) deserves repeated watching.
